Bio
The story of Igimèjí
Kayla Scales (vocals, piano, keys) and Oladipo Oyediran (guitar, vocals, drums) started working together musically in fall of 2016 in North Texas. It started with a couple jam sessions, then before they knew it they had a couple songs. From there, a budding friendship and love forged through musical creativity emerged. In 2017, they moved to Kathmandu, Nepal and started giving performances at a local bar named Booze Belly. It was then that Igimèjí was truly born! They wrote their first single "Magic" while still in the Kathmandu Valley, a song that details the beauty, pain, and setbacks of those months living in Nepal. In 2018, the music duo returned to Dallas-Fort Worth, where they immediately decided to continue the performance career they started in Nepal. They gave performances everywhere they could, from the living rooms of close friends to known stages such as Curtain Club and M.A.S.S and gradually made a name for themselves. Soon they added Jelen Farrow (drums) and Uzoma Aharanwa (bass) to fill out their R&B, rock fusion sound. From 2019 through 2021, they concentrated their efforts on performing live, writing songs, recording demos, building a supportive base in Dallas-Fort Worth and spreading their message of positivity everywhere they could. Their debut single Magic was released on July 11th, 2020. In spring 2021, Uzo departed from the band, while simultaneously, Igimèjí crafted and recorded their first EP, Two Trees, which was released on July 11, 2021. Then on July 18th, the band released their first music video for their single, Magic, through DayDream Media. With the release, came budding new changes, including a focus on visual media and a new member! Aaron Payton, of Melon Soda and dTb fame, joined on bass and background vocal. Igimèjí played at the West Main Arts Festival in May, the Deep Ellum Arts Festival in September, and the Ramblin' Roads Festival in October. In between these festivals, Ladi and Kayla played their duo set around town as much as possible still, performing at the Wine Therapist and Herf's Taphouse in Denton.
In 2022, this group of sonic wizards is already crafting and performing new music, set to be released at a later date and had the pleasure of closing out the Deep Ellum Arts Festival on Sunday April 3rd. Since their performance at the Deep Ellum Arts Festival, they have done an interview with Meia Potter from the Morning Mixtape with Meia on Deep Ellum Radio. On April 28th, their song, Running, made its' radio debut on KXT 91.7. On July 24th, 2022 the band released a music video for their song, Water, which can be viewed on YouTube. Igimèjí joined the Amplify 817 family and Two Trees EP is available at the Fort Worth Public Library for the next 3 years. The band played their first headlining show at the beloved Fort Worth venue, Tulips, courtesy of Amplify 817. In the winter of 2022, the duo made an appearance in the Fort Worth Parade of Lights.
In 2023, the group has continued to see growth, expansion and exposure! Playing at the Main Street Arts Festival in Fort Worth and opening for psychedelic folk band The Copper Children at Deep Ellum Art Co. were major moments. The band is releasing their next single, Crazy(for you) on July 11th, 2023. The new single has been their widest received single to date. Crazy(for you) has been played on KXT 91.7 and has been written about in music blogs such as Uranium Waves and TecoApple. In October, the duo performed at the State Fair of Texas and completed their first official, out of state tour in Colorado, with great success. They continued to perform at larger festivals such as Arts Goggle
